2015.The Challenges of Policing our Cities.

    The bank robbery that
took place rambo style in Festac Town
on Wednesday,13th October 2015 left a lot of
residents of the area dumbfounded. However to
a few discerning ones, the invasion by gangsters was long overdue. How was it possible that an invasion of a boxed in
town like Festac could happen in broad daylight without the relevant security outfits rising up adequately to the challenge?
Festac or Festival Town git its name
from the Black and African Festival of Arts
and Culture held in Nigeria between 15th
    January and 12 February,1977.
The town or village was designed
to house the participants who were estimated
to be in the neighbourhood of 45000.
The town was designed in such a manner to have state of the
    art electrical generators,police and fire
    stations,banks ,supermarkets,health
    centres etc.
After the festival,The Federal Government of Nigeria allocated
the housing and landed properties to
eventual winners who participated in a ballot. The houses
so allocated were not to be disposed to third parties.
The famous Ipi Tombi Troupe from South Africa
    was there.Andrew Young,Stevie Wonder were
there and a host of others.
The Festac Anthem written by Margaret Walker
from Alabama,USA was entitled 'For my People'
The fourth stanza of the anthem says
Let the martial songs be written
    Let the dirges disappear
Let the race of men now rise
    And take control

The festival itself was a heat jamboree of sorts.
All African countries, all black communities outside the African continent were
    invited to participate.People came from
    Brazil,Guyana,Bahamas,Jamaica,Trinidad and Tobago,
    Antigua,Barbados,Grenada etc.
    Performers included Miriam Makeba
    Osibisa,Martha Mbulu,Nigerian Dance
    Troupe,Harambe Dancers fromKenya,
    Ghana Festival Dance Company,Aboriginal
Dance Troupe from Australia and many more.
Rather than disappearing, the dirges have risen in
crescendo and the lamentations and wailings of the
    people have not waned,what
with the staccato of bullets flying here and there in
Festival Town unabated on this fateful day.The men
who rose to take control were but men of sartorial
    elegance wielding AK 47s,Rocket
    propelled grenades or TOGs.These
were the men that took over on that day
to strike fear and cause mayhem.
Every day in Festac Town is like a carnival.
In Nigerian parlance it is 'always happening' in Festac, for there is never a dull
    moment there.Hotels and Brothels
old and young prostitutes including girls of 12 and 13 are reputed
to bd involved in the business.Shops, boutiques, markets,Indian hemp and cocaine joints cum other
hard drugs joints are sprouting out daily in good
old Festac to the chagrin of decent
minds who want to live in peace. In all
    these cacophony of confusion,you will
still find good private schools, decent hotels
    and apartments,schools of music
    Art galleries,picturesque scenes
of boat paddling on the brackish
water canals.Young men and women dressed 'whatz up' style
parading all over the place with fake American
accent. In Festac Town you are bound to meet the good
the bad and the very ugly.
It was this setting that saw the gang
style robbery of Access and Diamond Banks
on 4th Avenue on October 13 at about 8.25 am.
The robbers numberinabout 40,some dressed in
    military camouflage,and others
in well tailored suits stormed the two banks.

  1. In California, robberies do occur but the only difference is that the authorities always and i mean always respond in a matter of minutes. Nigeria needs a transparent source of leadership in all parts of the armwd forces and police. Reformation of the police should be taken seriously; firstly give them a living wage and free education to their children and healthcare, secondly anyone caught collecting bribe should get administrative disciplinary action to set example. Thirdly, they should have competency exams frequently on security matters and lastly the federal government should allocate funds each fiscal year to provide them with adequate equipments to perform their job functions accurately and with precision.
